CALENDAR Meet Australian shepherds Cinch and
Remi, the calendar dogs for January in
the new 2017 Zoological Medicine
DOGS Society (ZMS) Pet Calendar.

Cinch is a five-year-old male blue
merle and Remi (short for
...AND CATS, LIZARDS, Remington) is a year-old red merle.
The photo was taken by Alina
A POCKET PET AND A HORSE Amaral, DVM ’17, last winter in
California’s San Gabriel
Mountains. Amaral’s photo was
one of 100 submissions in the
calendar contest. The 12 winners
were selected by the number of
likes they got on the club’s
Facebook page.

This is only the second year
ZMS has published a
12-month wall calendar as a
fundraiser for club meetings and field trips, said
Connor Ellis, DVM 2019 and club president.
“Last year’s president, Analisa Edell, DVM ’18, came up with the idea,” Ellis said. “She
“Doug” from Lauren Hunter, DVM ’19
said people would be so excited to see their pet in a calendar, they would buy it to show
everyone.”
Edell said there were 139 photo submissions from students and staff from each of the
nine colleges on the WesternU Pomona campus last year. “Our calendar sales actually
raised close to $700 for our club in the first year,” she said. Since it was so well received,
the club decided to do it again.

“We encourage photos with a theme that can be tied to specific seasons or holidays,”
Ellis said. The highly energetic Cinch and Remi enjoying the snow was a perfect fit for
winter weather. Dogs Jackson and Raven, from Chelsea O’Toole, DVM ’18, pose with
flower petals and heart-shaped toys that suggest February’s Valentine’s Day. Doug the
“Slinky” from Anna-Marie Ruoff, DVM ’18
pug in a Halloween head dress, photographed by Lauren Hunter, DVM ’19, was the
choice for October.
The 2017 calendar was sold in advance on campus during lunch hours for two weeks
early in November for $15 each. To save costs, the club prints only the number of
calendars that were pre-ordered “and a few extras,” Ellis said.

“Next year, we are hoping to set up an email order system,” he said.
That could increase sales by making it easier for local community members as well as
students and staff at the other colleges to buy the calendar.
Other 2017 calendar pet photos were taken by Alexis Wohl, DVM ’19; Mika Polniaszek,
DVM ’20; Anna-Marie Ruoff, DVM ’18; Amber Pentoney, DVM ’20; Julia Harper,
DVM ’17; Amanda Liggett, DVM ’19; Morgan Jacobsen, DVM ’18; Jacob Merryman,
“Luna” from Alexis Wohl, DVM ’19
DVM ’19, and Melanie Sailor, DVM ’17.
